The unit still has to sit level on ground that is not, on a pad or stand that will not creep downhill over a decade of freeze and thaw. Defrost and condensate water has to be taken somewhere deliberate, because on a slope it will otherwise find its own path toward your foundation. Houses built around a view
The upper slopes and the British Properties are full of large detached homes with a wall of glass facing the water, because the view is the point of the house. Glass is where heat leaves in January and arrives in July, and it is unevenly distributed — the room with the view behaves nothing like the bedroom on the uphill side. A system sized off floor area alone will be wrong in both directions, so we run a room-by-room heat loss and heat gain rather than a whole-house rule of thumb. What that generally buys is inverter equipment that modulates down instead of cycling, with capacity placed where the glass is rather than spread evenly through a house that is not.
If you are coming off oil or electric baseboard
Conversions here are rarely a straight swap. Coming off oil means the tank has to be decommissioned properly and the electrical service usually needs a serious look, and if the house was heated by hot-water radiators or baseboards there is no ductwork to reuse at all — so the honest comparison is a ducted system with all of the ducting still to build, against a multi-zone ductless system that needs none of it. We price the parts that are not the heat pump as carefully as the heat pump.
Winter up the hill is not winter at the water
Ambleside and Lower Lonsdale get the mild, wet coastal winter everyone expects. Upper Lynn Valley, upper Capilano and the top of the British Properties sit hundreds of metres higher and take noticeably more snow and far more freeze-thaw in the same week. Equipment has to be specified for the address rather than for the municipality: outdoor units raised on stands so the coil stays above accumulated snow, defrost behaviour that has been thought about rather than assumed, and meltwater routed somewhere it cannot refreeze into a slab beneath the unit and block the airflow you paid for.
