Sized for the coast, not for a rule of thumb
Coastal BC is mild and wet with a short cold snap and summers hotter than the housing stock was built for, and that combination rewards equipment sized on a heat-loss calculation rather than on the size of the equipment being replaced. An oversized system short-cycles, pulls out little humidity and wears itself out early. We measure the building, look at insulation, glazing and duct capacity, and quote the system that fits it. The calculation comes with the quote.
Ductless where ducts do not exist
A lot of Vancouver housing — older homes, laneway suites, converted attics, small storefronts — has no ductwork and no sensible way to add it. A ductless mini-split solves that with a compact outdoor unit and one head per zone, run through a small wall penetration. Multi-zone systems let each room hold its own temperature, which costs less to run than conditioning the whole building to suit its worst room.
Yes. Cold-climate inverter systems produce useful heat well below the temperatures the Lower Mainland sees, and where a building needs it we design in a backup heat source for the coldest days. The design temperature we size to is stated on your quote.
The equipment is one line on the quote. Whether there is usable ductwork, how many zones you want held at their own temperature, and where the outdoor unit can physically sit move the number as much as the model on the box does. We survey the building first, and the heat-loss calculation goes out with the quote so you can see what the sizing rests on.
